Brighton in Spring

Brighton in spring:

Springtime in Brighton is magical.

For anyone that lives on the south coast, the winter months can be a bit brutal. We suffer from the glum and grey like the rest of the UK, but the cherry on top is the relentless wind. So, when springtime arrives, Brightonians emerge from their slumber eager for a good time.

Brighton is popular largely for its attractive beach, bars, social and creative scene. Previous to the mid-2010s this was limited to a range of boozers, the east pier and restaurants. Since then, however, the booming speciality coffee scene has brought with it countless high-end coffee shops.

There are more than 7 roasters in central Brighton alone and over 50 places to get coffee in the city. Our city is a haven for coffee-lovers.

Types of consumers:

We all consume our coffee in different ways in Spring. From takeaway flat whites on a morning stroll, the evening-time espresso, a bespoke hand brew from the local roastery or a sugary iced coffee whilst studying for exams and dissertations.

You won't be hard pressed to spot someone drinking a coffee within 5 minutes of leaving your home.

Coffee has been a major part of UK consuming culture for a few decades now, but in Brighton it seems different. As someone who has lived in Brighton for 7 years, I feel at home here, but I have lived in a few other cities before this. There has been no other city like Brighton, where I've been able to find a locally owned cafe/business selling coffee roasted around the corner or in the next town along with such ease. It's this compact, local trading that gives the city a self-reliant, proud and robust business culture. A sense of community and common interest in a town that already has so much in common with its people.

We host almost all types of people and our coffee industry reflects this. There is an expanding Arab and Persian micro-culture in Brighton, whose business owners offer something different from the chains and British-themed speciality coffee shops. From boreks to Tunisian-cake, speciality coffee roasted within the city by brands like Pelicano is paired with treats and grub often associated with deserts and brick and stone buildings battling the heat. Brighton's welcoming of international culture means that it's hospitality sector will only expand in the future as we learn more from those who choose our city to migrate to.

Wholesale partners: My Coffee Story

In the heart of Kemptown sits a homely, independently owned gem. Owned by two of the loveliest people to run businesses in Brighton & Hove, Berkay & Sinem.

Sinem, the site's baker and co-owner, makes the tastiest, freshest cakes you'll find in Brighton. From fresh-fruit cheesecakes to mouth-watering loafs, cookies and a range of boreks to choose from, all made downstairs in their basement/kitchen. There's even plenty of vegan options.

Open from 7am every morning except Sundays (8am), this is the best spot for an early-doors brew in the city.

They are currently brewing our Colombia, Pitalito, a single-origin powerhouse from importing partners Cafe Imports.

Location: 6 St James's St, Kemptown, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN2 1RG
